2010 Session Schedule

January 11 - First day of session

January 12 - Governor's Condition of the State Address & Budget Released

January 13 - Chief Justice of the Iowa Supreme Court's Condition of the Judiciary Address

January 15 - Last day for legislators to request & sponsor bills (committee chairs and leaders can still make requests)

February 12 - First Funnel Deadline - Bills have to be voted out of a House or Senate Committee to remain eligible for debate, unless they spend money or propose a tax or are sponsored by legislative leaders. Bills that do not are considered "dead" and can no longer be acted upon.

March 5 - Second Funnel Deadline - Bills have to be passed out of either the House or the Senate, and out of committee in the opposite chamber to remain eligible for debate, unless they spend money or propose a tax or are sponsored by legislative leaders. Bills that do not are considered "dead"  and can no longer be acted upon.

March 31 - 80th Day of Session - This is the "last day" of session, although legislators can (and usually do) go longer.  However, legislators will no longer be getting paid for work past March 31. Typically, legislative sessions held in odd-numbered years (like 2009) are 110 days long, and legislative sessions held in even-numbered years (like 2010) are 100 days long. However, legislators wanted to save money during this tough budget year, and decided to shorten session from 100 days to 80 days, saving millions of dollars.
